Terrorism has had a huge effect on
the United States. Ever since 9/11, it’s
been very apparent that terrorists have the power to create huge upsets in
America. As citizens, we are always
aware of what is going on in other countries with our troops at war. The big thing we hear about these days is
ISIS. It’s all over the news, mostly
every day, and even on social media sights.
When media covers stories of terrorists and their powers and threats to
America, we are giving them the publicity that they want.
I
understand that we definitely need to be aware of what is going on in other
countries where are own men and women are fighting for our country and freedom, but when "ISIS" is the only thing we are seeing, the media is starting to be propaganda for ISIS and other terrorists. This is exactly what the terrorists’ want, the attention. They want to prove how powerful they are, and
how they can disrupt the lives of Americans. Their main goal is to cause fear through the media attention they are getting.
There was
an article on CNN that stuck out, Juan Manuel Santos gave a speech cautioned
news media reporters to be careful to not be used and manipulated by
terrorists. He said, “I’m not saying,
and be careful not to misinterpret me, that terrorism is the media’s fault, but
terrorism thrives on generating terror.”
When there are many reports on ISIS, and their plans or their acts of
violence, it’s that, that is generating fear within the United States. It’s all part of the plan of the terrorists;
to make us fear them.
News stations and reporters aren’t the only ones being
sucked into the trap for attention.
Social media sites, mostly twitter, are being used by ISIS to broadcast
violent acts to the world. There was a
video posted of a pilot being burned to death.
The question is why hasn’t anyone shut this twitter page down? American
companies aren’t taking action, and neither is the government. There is say that the social media accounts
aren’t being shut down because it’s violating “free speech rights.” Free speech rights for terrorists? Crazy
right? These terrorists are killing
innocent Americans and there is still sympathy for them. The media is giving terrorists exactly what
they want, our attention.
There may not be a fix to the controversy of media and
terrorism, and its influence on America as well as terrorists. There will always be two sides. One being the media is just making Americans
aware of what is going on overseas, and the second being, media is giving
attention to the terrorists and it could in return hurt us, because the
attention is giving power to the terrorists and their acts of violence. Personally, I believe that the media is
giving terrorists too much attention in the media, and too much freedom with
their social media accounts. They are
feeding off of the media, which makes them feel powerful and possibly superior
to Americans. There needs to be
boundaries where the media is simply informing citizens and over
informing to a point where it's giving terrorists too much attention.
